Photo Album of Thrikkarthika

Thrikkarthika (Malayalam: തൃക്കാര്‍ത്തിക, Tamil: திருக்கார்த்திகை) is celebrated on the day of Karthika Nakshthra (Star) in the Tamil/Malayalam month of Karthika/Vrichikam (november-december).  On that day people light deepams (esp. clay lamps, candles, oil lamps) on their houses.  After lighting the deepams, people used to make sweet dishes like Therali Appam (by using rice, jaggery, coconut and therali leaves), Elayappam/valsan (by using rice, jaggery, coconut and poriyani/banana leaves) and also used to cook tuber crops.  Since people are using more tuber crops on this day, Govt. of Kerala has declared this day as tuber crops day.  This day is celebrated as Lord Subramaniya’s (Muruga) birthday.  The famous Chakkulathukavu (near by Thiruvalla, Kerala) pongala is happening on this day.  (snaps are from my house)
