Rameswaram/Rameshwaram is a temple town located in Rameswaram (Pamban) Island in Ramanathapuram district of Tamilnadu in INDIA.  Rameswaram is connected with Indian mainland by a century old (Opened in 1914) Pamban road and rail sea bridge.  It was India’s first and longest (2065 metres) Sea Bridge before Bandra-Worli sea link.  The rail bridge is double leaf bascule bridge, which can be raised to pass ships and boats under the bridge.  India’s former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam belongs to Rameswaram.  India’s tallest (323 metres) television transmission tower is located here and it was owned by Doordarsan (National television broadcaster of India).  Talaimannar (North western point of Srilanka) is 30km away from Dhanushkodi (South eastern tip of Rameswaram Island).

Rameswaram is one of the four holiest places (char dhams) of the Hindus along with Badrinath, Puri and Dwaraka.  Rameswaram and its surrounding places are related to the epic Ramayana.  According to Ramayana, Rama built a bridge between Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar to Srilanka to save his wife Sita from by killing the abductor Ravana.  After this incident Rama prayed here to Lord Shiva to absolve the sins that he might have occurred during the war against Ravana in Srilanka.
